4.1 What can I do about unsolicited bulk Email?
What To Do About UCE or SpamNMIA policy absolutely forbids any of our subscribers or clients to send or to be party to any spam. We cannot do anything about unwanted messages once they have been received, unless the volume of such messages amounts to harassment or is illegal.
Today, spam or UCE (unsolicited commercial email) is a fact of Internet life. It has become more common over time, as spammers collect more email addresses, and as more Internet users respond positively to it, making it more profitable.
It is very difficult to stop or avoid SPAM without disrupting normal mail or usenet service. Any attempt to block spam involves a risk of inadvertently blocking a message you wish to receive.
In general, NMIA advises not to respond directly to any spam message, in particular not to try to prevent further spamming by filling out a form or sending a reply to a spam message.
NMIA does not initiate any control of email or usenet news because we are not qualified to determine what our subscribers should see. To do otherwise would be censorship and an unacceptable intrusion.

* MANUAL CONTROL
The simplest control method is to view the subject lines of your mail and exercise your right to hit the dele te key if you don't like what you see or if you recognize the email as something you don't want. This may be sufficient, but is somewhat time consuming and requires that the offending email be brought into your computer first.
* EMAIL CLIENT PROGRAM FILTERS
* FILTERING BEFORE DOWNLOADAn email client program is the one you use on your computer to send, receive, and read email. Many newer email client programs have the ability to automatically examine each incoming email and sort them based on their source address. It is possible to discard UCE using the selective filtering abilities of these email client programs on your computer.
Current versions of Eudora, Netscape, and Outlook, are able to filter. Some of these programs can do elaborate filtering, once they have been configured to do so by the user. You can set up these email programs to th row messages away if they come from certain addresses or if they contain certain undesirable keywords. These programs do require that the unwanted email must be downloaded onto your computer before it can be rejected. Instructions for configuring these filters are included in the program's Help facility.
* BASIC PROCMAILIf you would like to have your mail filtered by NMIA before it reaches you, there are a few options.
* TO, CC, and BCC ONLY PROCMAILNMIA will, upon your request, implement an email filter called Procmail. The advantage of this approach is t hat the control takes place on our email server, so that the unwanted email is never transmitted to your computer. Of course, as with any SPAM filter, it is still possible for an occasional undesired message to get th rough to your computer.
The Procmail program is very powerful and capable of controlling email delivery in almost any manner desired. It is, however, a unix based utility and for that reason configuring it can appear daunting to the non-unix user.
Consequently, we offer several levels of implementation for Procmail filtering, each providing different degrees finesse in filtering capabilities.
* ADULT CONTENT PROCMAILThis is a basic filter that block all email not specifically directed to your email address either in the TO or CC fields. Many spammers send messages with forged headers. You've probably noticed messages sent to "
" or other bogus email addresses. This filter attempts to block such messages.
* CUSTOM PROCMAILThis filter blocks email based upon a common set of words used in adult spam. The filter looks for these word s throughout the entire email, so is more likely to cause a false positive (i.e. block a message that is not spam).
A list of the words used in filtering can be emailed to you at your request.
topYou can elect to have Procmail enabled on your account and then modify the above list on your own. If you ne ed help, we can offer some modest assistance in modifying this list. If you need more specific filtering opt ions such as filtering mail based on content of undesirable keywords, we can implement a filter customized to your needs for a nominal fee.
Eventually, we may have several levels of more or less customized filters from which any subscriber may choose.
These other levels of Procmail implementation require a little more involvement and understanding of the configuration process but can be much more specific and effective.
If you have an interest in Procmail filtering at any level, please call our support line at 247-0888 or send email to help@nmia.com

How to disable winpopup messages
Spammers have found a new means of irritation, utilizing Windows' winpopup messages.
Winpopup messages are used by the windows operating system to display error messages to the user, which can be somewhat helpful. Anyone with malicious intent, however, can utilize this service to display any message they would like on any Windows XP, 2000 or NT machine using only an IP address. If you believe this is happening to you and you'd like to disable this annoyance, perform the following:
